The Global Malaysian Studies Network (GMSN) traces its roots to a concept proposed by the Australian National University in 2014. Originally demonstrated at ANU (GMSN@ANU), the initiative was designed to serve as a significant platform for scholars in Malaysian Studies, enabling rigorous, balanced exploration of Malaysia’s politics, economy, and society.
GMSN has evolved into a network-based organization that connects various academic institutions dedicated to Malaysian studies. Initially established under the auspices of the Malaysian government, the network is now coordinated by the Institute of Ethnic Studies (KITA) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Through this role, GMSN facilitates collaboration among multiple institutions, fostering deeper intellectual engagement with Malaysia’s rich history, multicultural heritage, and societal dynamics.
The goals of GMSN are manifold: it strives to increase awareness and understanding of Malaysia among academics and thought leaders; to deepen knowledge of Malaysia’s history, multiculturalism, and heritage; to serve as a central hub for Malaysian Studies; and to invigorate the establishment or revival of Malaysian Studies programs and chairs at overseas institutions.
Underlying GMSN’s mission are the collaborative pillars of partnerships, resource sharing, and sustained cooperation. Through these principles, GMSN encourages interest in Malaysian Studies, supports scholarship grounded in evidence, and promotes an informed public discourse on Malaysia.
The network currently centers its activities around five key objectives: developing a comprehensive database of scholars in Malaysian Studies (“Malaysianists”); advancing collection development; engaging in public advocacy; establishing academic fellowships; and organizing conferences and publications.
